EC je mjera koncentracije, ali nije specifi\u010dna za tip iona. Ion je nabijena \u010destica prisutna u otopini koja doprinosi protoku struje. Ioni nastaju kada se sol poput natrijevog klorida otopi u vodi kako bi se dobile \u010destice koje imaju elektri\u010dni naboj. Natrijev klorid, na primjer, razdvaja se na Na+ i Cl\u00af. TDS koristi jedinice mg\/L (ppm) ili g \/L. Na nekim mjera\u010dima korisnik mo\u017ee unijeti TDS faktor za pretvorbu.
