Kada se CO2 otapa u morskoj vodi, stvara uglji\u010dnu kiselinu (H2CO3) i osloba\u0111a H+, koji zatim reagira s karbonatnim ionima (CO32\u2212) i aragonitom (stabilni oblik kalcijevog karbonata) u obliku bikarbonata (HCO3\u2212). Dana\u0161nja morska voda izuzetno je bogata otopljenim karbonatnim mineralima.
