Aquariums are man-made habitats that contain a variety of fish, plants, corals, or other aquatic organisms.
Two main categories are freshwater aquariums and saltwater aquariums, which often mimic the marine environment.
The more artistic types of aquariums use natural elements to create an aquatic landscape. In the absence of artificial decorations, these natural aquariums take our environment as their source of inspiration. Whether it’s an underwater Amazon jungle, Japanese “Iwagumi” rock formations, or a tropical coral reef, having a living work of art in your home has never been easier or more exciting!
We’re excited to welcome not one, but two NEW Checkers® to our Marine Checker® family!

Our Ammonia Checker® HC (HI784) provides an uncomplicated, highly accurate, and budget-friendly way to measure ammonia (NH3/NH4+) in saltwater/marine environments. Ammonia is naturally found as part ...
pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration in your water. The higher the concentration, the more acidic the water. A neutral pH is 7; most fish can generally live between 6 and 8. Keeping the pH stable and within optimal measurement ranges reduces stress for your fish and aquatic animals, helping them resist disease and tolerate other stressors. Maintaining an ideal pH can also significantly improve growth, behavior, and overall appearance.
Alkalinity is measured in degrees of carbonate hardness, commonly abbreviated as dKH. Alkalinity is of great importance to the marine environment because it not only provides the carbonate ions necessary for the regeneration of the calcium carbonate skeleton of coral reefs but also acts as a pH buffer against large changes in acidity.
Calcium is required for the development of the calcium carbonate skeleton of coral reefs and is an essential component of marine waters.
Nitrate is a byproduct of the nitrogen cycle. Excessive amounts of nitrates promote the growth of undesirable organisms, including algae and dinoflagellates, while insufficient amounts can lead to starvation, in which small-polyp stony corals (SPS) and other corals exhibit signs such as loss of color and pallor.
Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia (ammonium ions) to nitrite, followed by the oxidation of nitrites to nitrates. The first step of this two-step process is carried out by nitrifying bacteria. During this rapid process, ammonium levels decrease while nitrite levels increase. Since nitrite is just as harmful as ammonia, nitrite levels should be kept at an undetectable level. A fully functional biological filter should be able to keep nitrite levels low.
Testing for phosphates is a standard procedure for saltwater environments and provides valuable insight into water chemistry to ensure the long-term health of corals. Phosphates are one of the many forms of phosphorus compounds found in marine waters. Excessive phosphate levels can inhibit calcification, skeletal formation, and growth in many coral species, especially those known as SPS. Furthermore, high phosphate levels can lead to disruptive algae growth. This can be problematic because algae often compete with sessile organisms for light, nutrients, and space, thus jeopardizing long-term balance and health.
